Sitting Room – “Atherton California interior”

By opening up small room’s adjunct to each other to allow vistas and flow, two small rooms feel like two larger spaces.

This den is not a large room, but the homeowner wanted it to feel special, as well as be more bright and inviting. The den is located adjacent to the dining room, and rather than closing off the space while dining, a vista is created effectively enlarging both areas. By removing a previously existing standard door and widening the threshold to accommodate a new pair of double doors, a dark and closed-off space by day is transformed, and its function extended to accommodate evening entertainment. The furnishings and fabrics were selected to stand up to daily family use, as well be seen as a luxurious extension of the formal dining room scheme at night. The custom-designed doors with inset stained glass and deliberate accent lighting give a warm yet sophisticated edge to an otherwise plain room. A dramatically colored mohair sofa is positioned as the focal point seen from the dining table, welcoming guests in to sit and chat intimately while enjoying a cocktail and conversation.
