An undistinguished area within a new home provides an opportunity for a unique space.

Most spaces in a home are easily identifiable, be it a dining area, living room, kitchen or even a breakfast nook. Secondary to these main spaces, are other architecturally provided opportunities, like a built-in window seat, a butler’s pantry, or a sun deck off the bedroom. Sometimes a space in an existing plan is simply unidentifiable, with no obvious use based on the pre-existing layout. This offers a great chance to provide a unique area with an unexpected purpose suited just for you. These spaces become personal gems within the home, and are driven by a client’s lifestyle needs and vision.

In this particular residence, a long generous hallway leading from the entrance foyer forms a large area from which the living room, dining room, and kitchen are accessible. With no other purpose, the client claimed this space as her personal getaway, to enjoy quiet time. With this, an unusual private sitting area is born within the center of the home, a suitably glamorous space of gilded formality to rest, read, or catchup on the daily list making. A demi lune secretarial acts as a home office for personal paperwork, a mirror for downtime primping, and most importantly, a location for her to make each day feel special. A fabric-draped wall is the formal backdrop to this one-of-a-kind place, and gives a first hint at the feeling of the home’s areas to follow.
