A foyer is not a space to merely pass through, but to enter into. No matter how grand or petite a foyer may be, it is the first introduction for your guests. While this particular foyer is a somewhat grand space, it needed to fit humbly within the bones of the architecture and also serve as the apex leading to several private and public areas of the home. A discreet stairway leads up to the private family quarters above, and a paneled fir door opens to a lovely moss-colored powder room. A slim arch signals more private areas beyond, and an opposing grand arch invites visitors to enter the great room and adjacent dining area with vistas looking out to the rear terrace. We carefully consider the architectural language and scale as well as the real-life requirements when determining lighting, flooring, and even a place for dropping in-coming and out-going items. The slender console table responds to the delicate window mullions, while its’ polished concrete top has a disarmingly humble quality that typical marble could not convey. The custom mirror has incorporated three woods; fir, ebony, and cherry to reflect the woods throughout the house and give timeless association. The end result is a welcoming space that is simultaneously both intimate and grand. Finishes, lighting, and elegantly but slimly scaled furnishings with thin simple lines are one with the architecture, exude comfort, and reflect the client’s ethos giving newcomers to the home a proper introduction. |
