Designing a kitchen based on the daily functions of a family can often shape a layout in an unexpected way. The plan of this kitchen was architecturally shaped by the homeowner’s request for a high counter area within the kitchen, which would allow him to sit and eat breakfast each morning. He desired a sturdy wood stool from which to perch, as the goings-on of the family morning ritual took place around him. This drove the plan of the kitchen, as the breakfast bar became a welcome architectural divide delineating between the family room and the kitchen with an overhead soffit housing glowing pendant lights. It allows for a flow through between the two spaces, yet gives architectural definition to each room. Not only does his morning counter provide a vantage into the kitchen, but also it offers unobstructed views out onto the terrace and pool area as the morning sun streams in. |
